The thyroid gland, situated in the front of our neck, resembles a small butterfly and plays a vital role in our endocrine system. It regulates various crucial functions of our body by producing and releasing specific hormones.

One of the primary responsibilities of the thyroid is to manage our metabolic rate, which determines how efficiently our body converts food into energy. As every cell in our body requires energy to function, any dysfunction in the thyroid can have widespread effects on our overall well-being.

Proper diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disorders are essential for restoring balance and promoting optimal health and well-being. Consulting with healthcare professionals can provide valuable insights and guidance for managing thyroid-related concerns.

What does Thyroid do?

The thyroid gland, functioning as an endocrine organ, plays a crucial role in hormone production and secretion. It synthesizes and releases the following hormones:

Thyroxine (T4)

This hormone serves as the primary product of the thyroid gland. While T4 doesn't significantly impact metabolism, it undergoes conversion to T3 through a process called deiodination once released into the bloodstream.

Triiodothyronine (T3)

Although the thyroid produces smaller quantities of T3 compared to T4, it exerts a much more significant influence on metabolism.

Reverse triiodothyronine (RT3)

The thyroid gland produces minute amounts of RT3, which counteracts the effects of T3.

This hormone assists in regulating the level of calcium in the bloodstream.

Type of Thyroid

Thyroid disorders can be categorized into two main types:

Hypothyroidism, a prevalent thyroid disorder affecting approximately 6-10% of women, is characterized by reduced production of thyroid hormone and is classified as an autoimmune disorder.

According to Ayurveda, hypothyroidism can be attributed to Agni Dushti, a condition that disrupts the digestive fire.

In the realm of Ayurveda, hyperthyroidism is referred to as Bhasmak rog. It affects approximately 1% of the population and involves the excessive secretion of thyroid hormones in the body. Hyperthyroidism encompasses various conditions such as Grave’s disease, Goiter, and Thyroiditis.

According to Ayurvedic principles, hyperthyroidism is attributed to an increase in pitta dosha, which subsequently disrupts the body’s metabolism by further intensifying the digestive fire.
